Cúirt - International Festival of Literature
Posted by Mayara Floss
E as SAMEDs me ajudaram a participar do Cúirt.
Fora do trabalho assisti o Poetry Slam e participei do Kitchen readings.
Mayara

- English Version ---
Cúirt - International Festival of Literature
Last week I participated as a volunteer of the Cúirt - International Festival of Literature, held in Galway in Ireland annually. Not only as a volunteer but also as public when I had free time. Helped mostly at Town Hall Theater, knew the structure of the theater, the numbering of the chairs, the order of the letters. Collected the tickets from the entrance and with luck could sit to watch the events. In the end, took the microphone to those who wanted to ask the authors. Also I recorded audio and helped to organize other small things. Also when I could have given a hand in another theater that was with the simultaneous events the irish thatre: "An Taibhdhearc". Oh, besides all of this i was distributing pamphlets on the street.
It's funny, before I get the "job" as a volunteer asked me what my "background", aka experience, events of any kind. All I could tell was that he had helped to organize a laborious Weeks of Academic Medicine (WAMs), and amazingly this served like a curriculum. I remember Steve Jobs talking about "how we should never try to connect the dots looking forward, but only looking back." And WAMs helped me join Cúirt. It's nice to think that my hand has left its mark, even so small, at the event.
I could not take many pictures, but I could be close to several authors, exchanging a few words, delivering some books. I attended the meeting with Sebastian Barry and Adam Foulds, The Over the Edge, Roddy Doyle and Hugo Hamilton, Dónal Anakana Schofield and Ryan, Liz Lochhead and Fleur Adcock, Poetry Reading with Sarah Jackson, Hannah Lowe and Michele O'Sullivan, Joanne Harris, Nikky Finney and Eleanor Hooker, Robin Robertson and Harry Clifton and Anne Kennedy Memorial Lecture with poets Lendennie Jessie and Mary Madec. Outside of work attended the Poetry Slam and attended the Kitchen readings. All in just five days of pure literature.
Lines would not fit here to talk about the whole experience. But certainly some tagged me more. As the discussion with Sebastian Barry and Adam Foulds on the construction of the characters in the books that talk about the war. It is interesting that the form of writing, the difficulties and the paths traversed by several authors, "combine" with your own when you will write. And reading Sebastian Barry was fabulous, something to be marked in interpretation and feeling. I'm reading the book "Secret Scripture" Sebastian Barry and is really impressive. Here is a video of him reading his book:
Another striking point was the meeting between Roddy Doyle and Hugo Hamilton, the two wrote books about the end of life. About people with cancer, and the importance of every minute. Without removing the mask of death with aggression, but little by little, showing the many faces of this journey. I'm here with two books "The Guts" from Roddy Doyle and "Every Single Minute" from Hugo Hamilton.
Certainly another fact that struck me was getting to know the author of the book that led to the award winning film "Chocolate" with Johnny Depp. Joane Harris is the kind of woman smiling eyes are small, because the smile is too big. It was a joy to discover that she could read Portuguese and present her with my books.
Also, being able to talk with Dave Lordan (I wrote the publication about the Kitchen Readings) and find other people who mades the actually irish literature (and not irish too). Illustrators, publishers and event organizers. All in a few days, a few hours, but very intense. I bought some books, made friends, and I indicated where the chairs were in the theatre. Often I joke if I chose Galway, or Galway chose me, I believe it was Galway. For those who did not participate is the great invitation to the next Cúirt in 2015.
Flying Hugs,
Mayara
