Trip Italy II: Genoa // Genova

Posted by Mayara Floss

Map of Genoa
Acquario

Trip Italy I: Genoa

Piazza de Ferrari
We started the second day of the trip waking up early and having coffee to go to Genova train. I was more prepared to Genova, had downloaded several tourist maps, offline maps and an app for the phone called "Genova Tour" that helped. I spent time organizing it all train. We took the Trenitalia path to Turin (Porta Nuova station) to Genova (Piazza Principe station), this train cost € 12.20.

Trains ^^
Train track
It was my first time on the train, taking out the trains amusement parks. I  delighted with the rail, with the landscape that had rapidly emerging in front of me. And slightly disturbed by the difference of pressure in the ear, because we were going near the sea. The first thing to arrive in Genoa was to go to the Hostel Ostello di Genova which was so far, we  stayed in a room for 8 people, it was quiet until some troublesome at dawn but in the fine. The hostel was far from downtown, but worth it for the beautiful view. To go back to the hostel and had to use the bus line number 40 or 640 AMT Genova, bought the ticket for the whole day (for five people € 18). The initial idea was to go the Aquarium of Genova (map 1), but ended up taking a long time to go back to the hostel and Aquarium and cost € 24 per person and we would have only 2 hours for a ride that seemed to need more time, then with a good map in hand we decided to go visit the main (and interested in) sights of Genoa.

Map of Genoa
Acquario
We started looking for the path of the central square Piazza de Ferrari we passed by Cattedrale S. Lorenzo (map 2) built in the twelfth / sixteenth century and you can clearly see the Muslim influence in the structure, with Islamic arches resembling very Mosque of Cordoba in Andalucia, Spain. We try to go at the Palazzo Ducale (map 3) built in the XIV / XVIII century that had an exhibition of Edvard Munch (painter's famous painting "The Scream"), but not for long just not coming.

Cattedrale S. Lorenzo

Cattedrale S. Lorenzo
Cattedrale S. Lorenzo
We followed the tour in Pizzza Ferrari (map 4) that it has the Palazzo Borzza on one side and her Regiane Palazzo, the place is beautiful and also has a statue of Garibaldi, was in fact a tribute to Garibaldi in Turin, Genova and Pisa. In this square which has the famous fountain symbolizing the city. We also went into the theater Carlo Felice is an opera house and then went to the meeting of the house of Christopher Columbus (map 5), put in my head that I wanted to know this place, after he "discovered" the Americas, but was disappointed with the household. He was born in Genoa, was blessed before leaving for America in Galway, discovered the Americas and died in Valladolid in Spain - a globalization in the fourteenth century.

Garibaldi
Casa do Cristóvão Colombo
Porta Soprana
We also went in the gate and tower "Medieval Gates" (map 5) built in the twelfth century and helped protect Genova in the past. After passed the church S. Maria Assunta di Carignano (map 6) and when we walked in it was going on a mass. We sat for a while and attended Mass, taking the opportunity to learn a little about the acoustic of the past, where the churches were properly designed to project the voice of priests during Masses.

S. Maria Assunta di Carignano
S. Maria Assunta di Carignano
Before going to dinner we were famous Italian pizza in Piazza della Vittoria where is the Arco Dei Caduti or Arco della Vittoria (map 7) built in the twentieth century after a restructuring and redevelopment of the city of Genova. We returned to the hostel tired, I used to look at the sky a little bit and just helping the a disabled woman to getting ready for bed, was almost two hours helping her. Is on the list to someday return to see the Aquarium, certainly.

Cinque Terre - Italy
 Do outro lado do Atlântico
O céu e o mar são o mesmo
E rezo uma pequena oração
Para a minha terra
Meu pampa distante
Penso na vida que corre
E discorro aqui
Envelheço e vivo
Sem grandes dores, nem pesar
Mas pura saudades
Desaguando em oceano
Envio abraços voadores
para atravessar a distância
Para a minha ânsia
Coração-passarinho
Voo de abraço em braço
E desatino no aconchego
das palavras
que também são aladas
Se parti em viagem
Volto um dia desses
por puro amor.

Leave

Cinque Terre - Italy

Across the Atlantic
The sky and the sea are the same
And I pray a little prayer
To my land
My distant home
I think in life that runs
And I still singing here
Getting older and live
Without great pain or grief
But pure longing
Flowing into into ocean
Sending flying hugs
to traverse the distance
To my craving
Heart-finch
Flight from hug to hug
And fall in coziness
of words

which are also winged
And If  I left on the road
I'll be back someday
By pure love.

Trip Italy I: Torino // Turim

Posted by Mayara Floss

Nesse trajeto a pé tirei várias fotos.

Sentinelle in Piedi

Garibaldi - heroe for two worlds

Stop sfratti sgomberi e pignoramenti

Mayara

Trip Italy I: Torino

On 29/03 started our trip to Italy with the Italian Society of NUIG. Will be 4 days of great culture and spend the sole of the shoes walking. Before arriving we enjoyed the beautiful view of the Alps that one of the great mountain ranges of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east through northern Italy, Switzerland (Swiss Alps), Liechtenstein and southern Germany to the southeast France and Monaco, to the west.

Alps
Torino Map

First I stepped on Italian soil on arrival from Turin airport around 10:30 am. We took a bus from Turin airport to the city center, the airport is actually dislocated, the passage of this bus costs € 6.50 and takes you to the subway station Porta Susa, near Piazza XVIII Diciembre (map 1). This was all too much news to me, who had never ridden a train or subway.

We went to the Hostel Open 011 walking, got lost several times on the way, but generally follow the right path. The Hostel was away from the city center, we can find the Hostel and get to know Turin at around 2 pm. Walk that path took several photos. Then back to the center with a very friendly Cablecar, landed near Piazza Reale, in the center of Turin.

Hostel OPEN 011
Train
I had no idea about the size of Turin to get there, is a big city, the fourth largest city in the country with nearly one million people. Located in northwest Italy and embraced by the Alps the place is beautiful and certainly with a very efficient transport system. With many theaters, museums, art galleries, etc., is certainly not a city to meet in one afternoon.

We were in the Piazza Reale (map: 2) where is the Madama Palace, took some pictures and went to lunch, we didn't have time to eat breakfast so we were very hungry. We took the opportunity to try the Italian coffee (map: 3) after eating kebab, certainly not the best breakfast for Italy, but in the end we were tired of pizza and pasta that they had everywhere. Also the price of kebab was good. We chose to go the Egyptian Museum (Egyptian Museum, map: 4), which cost € 5 for students, the second largest outside Cairo and stayed there a long time, certainly the old story of seeing with their own eyes is worth here is amazing being able to know history "closely."

Museu Egizio
Museu Egizio
Museu Egizio
At the exit from the Egyptian Museum were toward Piaza Carlos Alberto and stopped to see several people quietly reading. I was finding it very interesting that form of protest, but when we try to talk to the Italians (sort of speaking Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and English) we find that the demonstration was against a law that is being voted in the Italian parliament on approval of gay marriage . The name of the event is in Piedi Sentinelle and I found a throwback to the current world. They tried to explain that the demonstration was an expression of freedom, but the freedom of expression that only heterosexual couples can form families.

Sentinelle in Piedi
We try to go at the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano (map 5) but it was already too late to enter. Wanted to see the bit of the history of Italian unification and the "hero of two worlds" Giuseppe Garibaldi, reminding a little the grounds of the southern Brazil.

Garibaldi - heroe of  two worlds

Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano

Still, after passing by a protest we were leaving the museum of the Risorgimento and come across another parade with many policemen escorting. It was a demonstration called Stop sfratti sgomberi and pignoramenti which means "Stop evictions and foreclosures." Again without understanding what was happening one of the protesters stopped and asked to explain, he was very attentive and explained that Italy was in crisis, many Italians were homeless and they were speaking out against mortgages from banks and actions eviction of many Italians. But he had to stop to explain why he was "behind" in the manifestation and right behind them was a manifestation of the fascists, I was shocked by a group of fascists walking behind the demonstration for the right to housing. I thought it was no more, and if there was not so blatant, it seems that humanity has not learned from his mistakes.

Stop sfratti sgomberi e pignoramenti

Tired after having slept little during the trip we tried to return to the Hostel but we were in the wrong address to the hostel and took us three hours going from the subway station to the train station to the bus stop and asking for help in a number of Italian people. The ticket to use all means of transport in town for one day is €5 of the Gruppo Torinese Transporti. We arrived tired and victorious after finally finding the Hostel, curious about the protests and many stories to tell. You lose yourself once in Turin, because after staying three hours changing stations you can travel anywhere in the city.

Soon I write more about the trip talking about Genoa, Cinque Terre and Pisa.

  Flying hugs,
Mayara

NUI Galway Medical Orchestra

Posted by Mayara Floss

Quadrangle

It was a night to come back with a heart full of joy, I loved being able to see cultural initiatives within the medical school. And reminded me of the Cultural FAMED being organized in the Rio Grande Federal University of Rio Grande, my university in Brazil, it is nice to think that maybe at some point of the time the room will fill in my School of medicine. I found a video that talks about the Orchestra and explaining that became a curricular activity for students, they earn credits by participating in the orchestra.

Another nice fact about this event is that it was organized to help raise funds for Voluntary Services Abroad Society, a society organized by the students of the fourth year of medical school of NUIG, founded in 1977 by Dr. Don Colbert, he sends groups volunteer students to the world. Of course in addition to enjoy the orchestra and choir was good to enjoy and help the soc.
